A note from CAFEH's founders.

Dear Community,

When we founded Community Action for Excellent Health (CAFEH), we were not trying to build a nonprofit. We were responding to a problem we could no longer ignore.

We kept seeing capable, thoughtful people, including our neighbors, friends, and patients, left out of conversations that shaped their health. Not because they lacked intelligence, but because the system lacked clarity. This was a disconnect with real consequences, and we knew something had to change.

As mother and daughter, we came to this mission from different paths. What unites us is a shared conviction: people do not need more red tape, more apps, or more lectures. They need clear, compassionate tools to make informed decisions. They need spaces where health feels human again. That is why we created CAFEH.

Today, CAFEH is a growing health empowerment initiative rooted in trust, clarity, and connection. Our workshops, events, and digital tools have already reached hundreds of participants. We support individuals in building the skills to ask better questions, engage with healthcare providers, and take meaningful action. We continue to evolve these programs through direct feedback and lived experience from the communities we serve.

CAFEH is a space where clarity comes before jargon.
Where connection comes before complexity.
Where no one is expected to navigate their health alone.

We believe health literacy should feel like a conversation, not a classroom. It should be lived, not memorized. It should be something we co-create, not something handed down.

We do not chase trends or one-size-fits-all solutions. We listen. We adapt. We respond to the everyday questions, cultural nuances, and quiet frustrations that often go unheard.

We also believe something radical.
When people are equipped with clarity and confidence, they do not just take better care of themselves. They become advocates and changemakers. They create ripple effects that improve families, communities, and the healthcare system as a whole.

This is the work we are committed to. It lives alongside our continued roles in the healthcare system and reflects our shared vision for a more inclusive and effective future.

We are just getting started. Whether you are a patient, a caregiver, a community leader, a funder, or a health professional, we invite you to join us in building a future where health literacy is not a barrier but a bridge.

With appreciation,
Dr. Betty Pierre-Gilles and Dr. Melody Nichols
